Kemampuan standart WordPress memang sudah sangat canggih. Tapi namanya manusia, tak pernah puas dengan satu hal. Karena manusia itu unik, maka apapun yang dibuatnya seringkali juga unik. WordPress memahami hal ini. Karena itulah WordPress membuat systemnya dapat berkembang dan dimodifikasi menjadi apapun juga.
Ada dua cara mengembangkan WordPress. Pertama dengan memakai plugin, yang kedua dengan memakai themes.
Plugin adalah script tambahan yang mengatur peningkatan kemampuan dasar WordPress. Misalnya plugin Akismet, yang bermanfaat untuk menambah kemampuan WordPress dalam menghadang laju spammer.
Sedangkan Themes, bermanfaat untuk mengatur tampilan depan WordPress.
Untuk mendapatkan plugin WordPress, anda bisa menuju ke menu Plugins – Add New. Sedangkan untuk mendapatkan themes WordPress, anda bisa menuju ke menu Appearance – Add New.
Selain itu, ada banyak pengembang plugin dan themes yang tidak mendaftarkan scriptnya di WordPress.org sehingga anda tidak bisa menemukan di dua menu diatas. Untuk itu anda bisa download plugin atau themesnya dan upload melalui menu Plugins / Appearance – Add New lalu pilihlah Upload pada menu bagian atas.

Untuk pengguna wordpress.com memang tidak disediakan fasilitas penambahan plugin.
